After much hard work and anxiety, opening night was a huge success. We packed the house, drank plenty of beer, and made some beautiful music. The LoftOpera team is endlessly thankful for the friends and new friends who came out to support our venture.
Thanks Brooklyn Based!05/21/2013 Underground opera might seem like an oxymoron for an art form that’s long been legitimized by mainstream musical purists–it doesn’t get more classical than Mozart–but a new collective of creative types is attempting to make opera less uppity by launching LoftOpera. Brooklyn Based Our Postcards Arrived, and They're Awesome05/20/2013 Everyone who donated to our Indiegogo will get one of these sexy postcards, because you are also sexy. Thank you Erin for making this happen. Our Indiegogo campaign came to an end earlier this week, and it was a huge success! Our sincerest thanks to everyone who donated. Thanks to the Indiegogo community and private donors, we exceeded our fundraising goal for Don Giovanni. Tickets are now on sale, rehearsals are underway, and everything is steaming ahead! Check out our new logo designed by the talented Erin Shigaki. Add Comment Our friend, the amazingly talented Krista Jansen, just posted a flattering endorsement of the project: They love opera, and were sad that it usually gets stuck in the usual expensive places. As much fun as it is to go to the Met once in a while, they thought that opera could be brought somewhere else- to the underground music scene. And maybe you’d be able to go more than once in a while. Maybe you’d be exposed to opera, in a way you haven’t been before. Maybe you didn’t even know you liked opera. Maybe finding yourself in a Brooklyn loft, drinking a local brew and listening to some beautiful musicians will change your mind. The fundraiser will begin at 7:30 PM. Cover will be $5, drinks will be $5, and donations will be optional. You can come with as little as $10 in your pocket and have a great time listening to some talented musicians. We will have classic opera (a couple of singers will serenade), 20th century music (a bit of John Cage), and two contemporary bands of very different stripes (Oh! My Blackbird and Tiny Hazard). If you want to support LoftOpera, see good music, or just drink some locally-brewed beer, come to South Williamsburg on the J/M/Z Marcy stop (5 minute walk) or the L Bedford stop (15 minute walk). Final destination: 141 S 5th St, apt 2E (between Bedford and Driggs) If you can't make it, then please consider donating to our Indiegogo campaign...Actually, just consider donating whether you're coming or not. Spent the morning making invites for LoftOpera's fundraiser party. Better hope we have your address! No, seriously, send us your address in a message if you want one of these beauties. Mark your calendars for the last full weekend in May, because that's when LoftOpera's premier performance goes live. Our rehearsal and performance spaces are decided upon and engaged, dates are set, and the real work is about to begin! Let me introduce you to two beautiful Brooklyn loft spaces: Just around the corner from the McKibben Lofts and next door to the a concrete mixing yard, Chez Bushwick is our rehearsal room with a view. Our first performance will be at the Gowanus Loft. This is our spacious new home where music and magic are going to happen at the end of May. This venue is easily accessible by train, and well worth the short trip; the space alone will take your breath away (pictures simply cannot do it justice). The video for our Kickstarter page has been edited! After many long hours, we few amateur video editors have come up with something passable. Granted, it took a couple of late nights fumbling and arguing over a MacBook, two home cooked dinners, an one accidental near-deletion--disaster averted. I can't complain too much, however, because Claudia Vitarelli provided a brick of Italian prosciutto (freshly imported, care of her mother: thank you Mrs. Vitarelli) which we sliced and ate with parmigiana and baguette. Oh lordy, that made the long hours worth it. The next step in this process is to finish up our application for fiscal sponsorship with Fractured Atlas. Once completed, a fiscal sponsor will allow us to take tax-deductible donations within our Kickstarter campaign. That should be finished in the middle of February, so keep checking back in, and we'll see you soon! |
