The Story

LoftOpera aims to enhance New York's music scene by infusing opera into Brooklyn's underground through integrated performances in loft spaces. Currently, the project is just getting off the ground, which is part of why it's so exciting. More and more artists and administrators are invested in our growing family, so we're really expecting something great.

A little background: The idea was first conceived when a community of students of art, music and liberal arts began hosting underground performances in Bushwick, Brooklyn in the late aughts. This group of artists--most were attending The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music--presented many, variegated artforms during their underground happenings, but the medium of opera was noticeably missing.

LoftOpera begins by introducing chamber performances of operas into this ever broadening community, and looks forward to connecting to the larger New York music scene.
